On August 15-16, the 8th meeting of BRICS Ministers of Industry was held in Nizhny Novgorod. The event was attended by the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Anton Alikhanov, the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Gleb Nikitin, as well as representatives of the BRICS member countries and partners, including China, India, South Africa, Ethiopia, the UAE and others.

The UNIDO delegation included Deputy Director General, Executive Director of the Directorate for Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Industrial Development Mr. Ciyong Zou, as well as representatives of the UNIDO Centre in the Russian Federation, Head Mr. Igor Kozhin and National Consultant Mr. Ivan Seregin.

As part of the event, a visit to two enterprises was organized for the UNIDO delegation: Melsitek LLC — an innovative enterprise in the field of medical laser research, developing its own technological know-how; HOMA LLC — a developer and manufacturer of polymer dispersions and adhesive systems. The delegation members were given tours of the factories and were shown their products.

A large exhibition was also organized on the sidelines of the meeting, where companies presented their technologies in various fields, such as metallurgy, chemistry, robotics, power engineering, engine building and others. The exhibition presented products from more than 50 companies in various fields. The UNIDO stand was also presented at the exhibition, where everyone was told about the organization’s activities, its tools and projects, in particular in the BRICS countries.

As part of the program, business meetings were organized, including a BRICS-EAEU-UNIDO round-table discussion dedicated to the synergy of developing economies and international organizations to accelerate industrial development and improve competitiveness.

The participants also discussed cooperation initiatives in the chemical industry, metallurgy, robotics and other areas. Promising areas of cooperation in the BRICS space include cooperation within the BRICS Partnership for a New Industrial Revolution — agreements were reached on the substantive development of initiatives in pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, mining and metallurgy, intelligent manufacturing and robotics, and others.

Special attention was paid to the creation of a BRICS Industrial Competence Center based on UNIDO. The Center will operate in the areas of digitalization of industry, increasing human resources and reducing trade barriers, and will also contribute to the development of industry in the countries of the association and strengthening their economic ties. The head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Anton Alikhanov emphasized that the center will become a platform for further deepening industrial cooperation.
