UNIDO Centre took part in the International Committee of the Red Cross discussion on food security in Africa

On April 3, in Moscow, at the site of the regional delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, an expert discussion „Food security in Africa — humanitarian challenges and possible solutions“ was held.

The event was attended by representatives of government and business structures, international and academic organizations working in the African direction, as well as a representative of the UNIDO Centre. Director of the Center for African Studies Andrey Maslov made a report on food sovereignty.

Representatives of Uralchem also took part in the discussion and spoke about the humanitarian supplies of the Uralchem Group, the prospects for expanding cooperation between the Group’s companies and African countries and possible ways to overcome food shortages on the continent.

Since the end of 2022, Uralchem Group has supplied more than 134,000 tons of mineral fertilizers to the African continent free of charge in order to mitigate the consequences of the unprecedented global food crisis. More than 111,000 tons of this volume were delivered with the assistance of the UN — to Malawi, Kenya, Nigeria and Zimbabwe.

As part of the general discussion, experts discussed issues of ensuring food security on the second most populous continent, as well as the work of the ICRC and Russian organizations in this area. Particular attention was paid to the role of Russian fertilizer producers in increasing food production in Africa. The participants also discussed the efforts being made to solve the food problem in Africa, as well as the measures that have yet to be implemented.
