Digital Technologies Addressing Climate Challenges. UNIDO Centre at the UNECE Regional Forum on Sustainable Development 2026

On 21–22 April, the UNECE Regional Forum on Sustainable Development 2026 took place at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. Organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the Forum served as a key regional platform to review progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to foster joint solutions for advancing the 2030 Agenda.

In 2026, the Forum was held under the theme “Transforming Together: Innovative and Equitable Actions for the SDGs”, focusing on accelerating the implementation of innovative and inclusive approaches to sustainable development.

The Forum brought together representatives of governments, international organizations, the private sector, academia, and civil society to exchange experiences, best practices, and scalable solutions in areas such as infrastructure, energy, sustainable cities, and partnerships.

The UNIDO Centre participated in the side event
“Digital on the Edge: Accelerating Digital Technology Readiness for the 2030 Agenda in Climate Extremes”, held on 21 April 2026 in a hybrid format.

The event was organized with the participation of international academic and institutional partners, including Imperial College London, United Nations University (UNU-MERIT), World Intellectual Property Organization, and Group on Earth Observations.

Key Themes and Discussions

The session focused on accelerating digital technology readiness to support the achievement of the SDGs in the context of increasing climate extremes. Key topics included:

  • the role of digital solutions in enhancing resilience to climate risks
  • bridging the digital divide as a critical barrier to sustainable development
  • leveraging data, innovation, and technology for informed decision-making
  • strengthening international cooperation in digital transformation

Special attention was given to the linkages between digitalization and the achievement of SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

During the discussion, experts emphasized that despite the rapid advancement of digital technologies, the persistent digital divide remains a major challenge to achieving sustainable development in the region.

The event brought together representatives of international organizations, research institutions, and expert communities working at the intersection of digital transformation, climate, and innovation. Speakers included experts from organizing institutions as well as representatives of global initiatives in data, technology, and sustainable development.

The discussion was cross-sectoral in nature and aimed at identifying practical approaches to accelerate the deployment of digital solutions in support of climate resilience and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
