UNIDO discussed the path to sustainable and technologically sovereign Industrial development at World Atomic Week

On September 27, 2025, a thematic session, „Industrial Automation: The Path to Sustainable Development,“ was held in Moscow as part of the World Atomic Week 2025 international forum. It was organized with the participation of Rosatom Automated Control Systems JSC and the Digital Economy Automated Non-Profit Organization.

The event brought together representatives from international organizations, government agencies, the industrial and IT sectors, academia, and business. The key focus of the discussion was the role of industrial automation in achieving sustainable development goals and enhancing technological sovereignty.

The UNIDO Centre in the Russian Federation presented the Organization’s position on digital transformation and sustainable industrial growth. In his speech, Igor Kozhin, head of the Center, noted that automation today is not only a technological trend but also a crucial element of sustainable industrial development:

„Industrial automation should help countries not only develop but also maintain their technological sovereignty. This is especially important for developing economies, which need to create and control their own key technologies. At the same time, UNIDO operates under the important principle that sovereignty is not incompatible with international cooperation. On the contrary, strengthening national competencies and sharing experiences between countries enhances the resilience of the global economy.“

During the session, participants discussed key challenges facing the energy and industrial sectors, including growing cyber threats, labor shortages, and the need to develop domestic technological solutions. Representatives of businesses and technology companies emphasized that resilience cannot be achieved without reliable and secure digital management systems.

Particular attention was paid to issues of international partnership, technology exchange, and knowledge transfer. UNIDO representatives noted that industrial digitalization must take into account aspects of inclusiveness and sustainability, and facilitate the transition to a low-carbon economy.

The session served as an important platform for exchanging views between government agencies, international organizations, and industrial companies, and confirmed the high potential for cooperation between UNIDO and the Rosatom State Corporation in the area of sustainable and technologically secure industrial development.
