Experts discussed business opportunities within a low-carbon economic agenda

On September 23, a joint meeting of the RF CCI Committee on Nature Management and Ecology, the Moscow CCI Committee on Ecology and Natural Resource Management, the Center for Green Economy and Climate of the VEB.RF Institute was held, within which the role and capabilities of the business community, associations of entrepreneurs in the formation and further implementation of the low-carbon agenda for Russia’s economic development.

The event was moderated by Sergey Alekseev, Chairman of the RF CCI Committee on Nature Management and Ecology, Honored Ecologist of the Russian Federation.

The event was attended by over 80 representatives of relevant ministries, committees of the Federation Council and the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, chambers of commerce and industry, Russian and foreign expert and business communities, including: PJSC Inter RAO, LLC SIBUR, OKHK Uralchem, PJSC Gazprom Neft, Trade Representation of the Russian Federation in Germany.

In his opening remarks Vice President of the RF CCI Dmitry Kurochkin spoke about the implementation of the strategy for the long-term development of the Russian Federation with a low level of greenhouse gas emissions until 2050 in the interests of business and the state, verification of greenhouse gas emissions, and the development of an accreditation system for verifiers. He also spoke about the need to study the risks timely and opportunities for business in the context of the global energy transition and the formation of a new climate policy in Russia.

Igor Bashmakov, Director of the Center for Energy Efficiency-XXI Century, Nobel Peace Prize laureate as part of the UN Climate Change Group, announced the objectives of the strategy for the long-term development of the Russian Federation with low greenhouse gas emissions until 2050.

Elena Medvedeva, regional representative of the RF CCI in the Benelux countries and France, made a presentation on the Role and Opportunities of Business Associations in the Formation and Further Implementation of the Low-Carbon Agenda and presented a number of proposals for cooperation with European partners, in particular, with the Eurochamber.

Valentin Uvarov, a member of the RF CCI Committee on Nature Management and Ecology, General Director of SR Climatic Monitoring System LLC, a member of the RAS Council for Space, presented a report on obtaining reliable and verified data on emissions and removals of greenhouse gases.

Sergey Korotkov, Director of the UNIDO Centre for International Industrial Cooperation, presented UNIDO methodologies for monitoring data on climate gas emissions and analytical platforms for tracking countries‘ performance.

“The UNIDO methodology uses a set of individual indicators related to industrial development, including emissions. To ensure that the best available sources are used for each indicator, data is taken from both internal and external databases, ”he said in his presentation.

Andrey Stetsenko, President of ANO Center for Environmental Innovations, spoke about the practical implementation of forest projects, which will result in the development of a system for the market turnover of certificates of absorbed carbon units, using the example of the Altai forest project.

As a result of the joint meeting, a consolidated position of the RF CCI will be formed, which will be sent to the relevant federal executive bodies.
